When bored, do something silly.

Boredom doesn’t strike me often, but when it does, I often find it hits with a burst of inspiration. This week, I was feeling particularly adrift at work and started researching a potential project we are taking on. One aspect of this project is transferring the hosting of some back end software to our infrastructure. I went to the github page of this particular tool and read what might be the dumbest paragraph I have ever encountered:

Hyku: A multi-tenant Hyrax application built on the latest and greatest Samvera community components. Brought to you by the Hydra-in-a-Box project partners and IMLS; maintained by the Hyku Interest Group.

I know less about this project after reading that garbage. It’s nonsense. I made the remark that I was going to build a lorem ipsum engine based on it… so I did that. At lunch. Launched it. You can go check it out

When I say I built this, I mean I asked Claude to build this with some very specific prompting. Afterwards, I edited it, cleaned up the code, and added a few extras (like the silly cookie window). It was a dumb project that was perfect for testing this workflow. At work, I’ve found AI to be severely lacking for any complex programming tasks. Making a basic website though? It was pretty great without needing a ton of intervention.

The important thing, is doing something. It was silly, but that doesn’t matter. It’s all to easy to have an idea, laugh it off, and move along. The doing is the part that matters. The idea is value-less. The result may also be valueless –and most certainly is in this example– but the doing is invaluable!
